Research in our World: Innovation in Computing
Students will complete a research report on an industry that they are interested in. They will research other projects that have been done in the same areas. Students will find a big question that they would like to analyze. They will then create a poster describing the process that they might use to investigate this question. Additionally the class could work together to choose a project to further the investigation with programming/questionnaires/interviews. Students will collect and analyze results and report their findings.

ASSESSMENT PRE/POST-TEST
What is innovation? What does it mean for something to be innovative? Where do you go to get reliable information on the internet.
OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to define innovative technology. Students will be able to analyze innovative technology. Students will be able to list three web domains to get reliable research.
CATCH/HOOK
Code.org supplies a couple of good videos: https://youtu.be/xQGsubJNbQw and https://youtu.be/QvyTEx1wyOY. Then discuss some of the innovations that are brought to our attention in these videos.
ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS
- Watch video’s about innovation.
- Seperate into pairs and pick a topic: Wearable Technology, Health and Safety, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Art and Design, and Smart Home.
- Using the internet look for innovative products within the topic you have chosen, Brainstorm some of these ideas on a blank piece of paper.
- Have a discussion about reliable websites and where to look first. Introduce Google Scholar.
- Decide on one product from your brainstorming session: What research can you find about this product. Do you have any big questions? What would you change to make it even better?
- Create a poster sharing this product and what you learned.
