Content Audit Checklist

Use this checklist to systematically evaluate any AI-generated STEM explanation, lesson content, or educational material. Check every item, then render your verdict.

AI Content Being Audited

What did you ask the AI to produce? Paste or summarize the AI's output

Factual Claims

All factual claims are verifiable.

Can you independently confirm each fact? Google a claim you're unsure about.

No invented citations or references.

If the AI cited a paper, textbook, or website — does it actually exist?

Numbers and calculations are correct.

Check at least one calculation by hand. AI frequently makes arithmetic errors.

Units are correct and consistent.

Watch for unit mismatches (e.g., mixing meters and centimeters, Celsius and Fahrenheit).

Scientific Accuracy

Core concept is accurately represented.

Is the fundamental science/math correct? Or did the AI subtly distort it?

No oversimplification to the point of inaccuracy.

Simplifying for grade level is fine. Simplifying until it's wrong is not.

No confident-sounding false statements.

AI specializes in sounding authoritative even when wrong. Flag anything that "sounds right" but you can't verify.

Formulas and equations are correct.

Check variable names, signs, exponents, and units in every formula.

Grade Appropriateness

Reading level matches the target audience.

Would your students understand this? Is vocabulary too advanced or too simple?

Examples are age-appropriate and relevant.

Are the contexts meaningful to students in this grade band?

Complexity matches the standard.

Is this pitched at the right depth for the NGSS performance expectation?

Prerequisites are appropriate.

Does this assume knowledge students haven't learned yet?

Bias & Representation

No cultural bias or stereotypes.

Are examples inclusive? Do they represent diverse contexts and names?

No gendered assumptions about STEM.

Does the content assume who does/doesn't do science?

Standards Alignment

NGSS codes are real and correctly cited.

Verify every standard code at nextgenscience.org. AI frequently invents codes.

Content actually addresses the cited standard.

Even if the code is real, does the content match what the standard requires?
